ENBE VIRTUAL VISIT – FAVELAS, RIO DE JANEIRO
The importance of "built environment" to the community/people/nation
Reflective:

In Rio De Janeiro, people would consider that they are 2 different worlds for the rich and the poor. The rich also known as ‘People of the Asphalt’ live in an organised layout area with clean lines and well-thought-out designs. They have people to build their houses with good quality materials. Their electric wires are hidden in the ground. The area is clean. There are fewer crime rates as people are more civilised in that area. The place is near the beach which is more for tourism.
Favelas are the ‘poor’ side of Rio de Janeiro also known as ‘People of the Hills’ because they live on hills. This place is not a government resident. The electric wires are everywhere, very cramped spaces and not an organised area. This place was made by slaves in 1888 because they had nowhere to stay. These places are organised by their own community. They are trying their best to live as some of them try and make their own houses by using what they can find or recycle materials. They try their best and make a creative space for everyone such as making an art centre for kids to learn art in Mare one of the favelas, taking pictures of every occasion happening whether it is a festival, strike or even graffiti in Providence.
The negative part of this place is their massive high crime rates probably because they aren’t as civilised as the rich and not well educated. Alemao, a favela that is known for its drug trafficking. The place is run by a drug trafficking gang called the red command and they have the biggest influence. They are a huge supplier of heroin. They had to use pacification to stop the drugs but they still kept going on. They are other crime rates such as getting robbed, bribery and even assault. The people from the ‘asphalt’ should help them out since people on this side of Rio De Janeiro are not run by the government. These people have the money to support and some of their maids and butler could be from this side of Rio de Janeiro.
